GasBuddy a free mobile app that allows users to search for real-time price information at gas stations across North America. Its Pay With GasBuddy+™ card allows card holders to earn cash back on gas and other purchases. The home page of the GasBuddy web site also has a tool that shows the cheapest gas in the U.S., by state.
GasBuddy is a free crowdsourced gas-price finder app that provides real-time price information for gas stations throughout the United States and Canada. It also offers a Pay With GasBuddy+ payment card, which gets you cents-off per gallon at virtually all gas stations, as well as cash back on purchases made at GasBuddy brand partners.
Yes. GasBuddy is a legit app that has the potential to save you a significant amount on gas, but comes with major concerns in terms of privacy. As of March 2025, GasBuddy has a 4.7 out of 5 star rating in the App store and a 3.8 out of 5 star rating in Google Play.
Yes. According to the app’s Privacy Policy, “GasBuddy is not intended for use by children under the age of sixteen (16).” GasBuddy’s Terms of Service (most recently updated July 13, 2022) offers a different answer to this question, saying: “The Service is intended for users who are at least eighteen (18) years old. If you are not at least eighteen (18) years old please do not access, visit or use the Service.”
When you sign up with GasBuddy you are asked to provide basic information like your name, address and e-mail address.
To get a Pay With GasBuddy+ card, you are asked to provide more information, including your driver’s license and income information. You are also asked to link your GasBuddy+ card to your checking account.
However, you can use the gas-price functionality of the app without a GasBuddy account and without approving the location permission. Simply type a zip code into the search instead of letting the app pinpoint you automatically.
Yes. In its Privacy Policy (most recently updated November 25, 2024), GasBuddy notes that it may share or sell your contact information with business partners. Your contact information includes your name, mailing address, billing address, email address and phone number. GasBuddy may collect this information “(d)irectly from you; passively; or though third parties.”
Also, if you access the Service and allow for location tracking, GasBuddy “automatically collects information about your precise geolocation” … “and may sell your precise geolocation in a manner that identifies you….”
If you provide other personal information to GasBuddy—in connection with a promotional giveaway, for example—that information may also be shared or sold to GasBuddy’s business partners. For instance, the GasBuddy app has a My Car section in which you are encouraged to provide the VIN # (or your car make/model/year) for your vehicle to “get notified about recalls!”
GasBuddy also shares and sells information about the device(s) you use to access the Service, writing: “We may collect information such as your mobile device ID, mobile ad ID, device type, and your use of features, functions, or notifications on the device, as well as signal strength relating to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth functionality, temperature, battery level, and similar technical data. We may collect this information even if you are not logged in to the Service. If you access the Service through a computer, we will automatically collect information such as your browser type and version, computer and connection information, statistics on page views, traffic to and from the Services, Internet Protocol (“IP”) address and standard web log information.”
Finally, if you choose to acquire a Pay With GasBuddy+ card, you need to provide your driver’s license and checking account information; GasBuddy says it does not share this information.
However, “if you register a Payment Card in connection with Pay with GasBuddy, or GasBuddy’s Card Link Program, we will collect or receive from third parties data relating to transactions with the registered Pay with GasBuddy card or your Payment Card.”
And if you enroll in Pay With GasBuddy+, your information will be disclosed to GasBuddy business partners that help administer the programs. These partners include: Dwolla, which facilitates fund transfers between GasBuddy and your bank account; ValidFI, which “gathers End User data from financial institutions; and CorPay, which provides (payment) card fulfillment services and payment processing services.
To opt out of the sharing of personal information and/or limit the use or sharing of your precise geolocation information by GasBuddy, go to:

The best thing about GasBuddy is its crowdsourced gas-price feature, which allows you to easily find the cheapest gasoline in your area. If you have location services enabled, the app will show you a list of places to get gas by “deal & distance.” You can also sort options by fuel type (Regular, Midgrade, Premium, Diesel, UNL88 and E85), as well as “credit only,” “cash or credit” or “Pay with GasBuddy,” the latter of which is limited to stations that accept the Pay With GasBuddy+ card.
If you don’t have location services enabled, you can still find the prices at gas stations in your area by inputting an address or zip code into the “current location” field.
In our experience, GasBuddy users frequently report prices, so prices appearing in the app are typically reliable and up-to-date.
The Pay With GasBuddy+ card is an “enhanced payment card” that offers savings when paying for fuel at the pump, or when making purchases in convenience stores. The advantage is that you’re not limited to particular stations (as is the case with the Upside app), and you can earn an extra 3 cents back per gallon for every $25 made in convenience store purchases.
Simply pay with the card and your gasoline or convenience store purchase is deducted via ACH from your checking account. Simply swipe or insert your card, and if prompted, choose “Fleet Card” or “Fuelman.” Savings (which take up to 7 days to display) appear in the app or on your e-mailed receipt.
It’s free to apply for the Pay With GasBuddy+ card. To apply, download the GasBuddy app, click on the icon at top-left, navigate to Savings Settings and apply under “Payment and Membership.”
According to the company, there are 2.51 million GasBuddy card holders, as of March 2025.
There is no credit check, but you must have a verified bank account to be issued a card.
You earn at least 3 cents off per gallon, with 5 cents off at select stations. You can save up to 30 cents per gallon with a “deal alert,” plus an extra 3 cents back per gallon for every $25 made in convenience store purchases. That said, the most cash back (GasBack®) you can earn is 33 cents per gallon.
Yes. They expire 12 months after they are posted to your account. To find your GasBack Rewards balance, navigate to the Rewards screen, then click on the Shopping tab to find your available GasBack points, which can be redeemed for gift cards from top retailers like Amazon, WalMart, Home Depot and Lowe’s.
GasBuddy’s Pay With GasBuddy+ Premium is a subscription program for which you pay $9.99 per month. Benefits include: 20 cents off per gallon on fuel purchases, and 22 cents off per gallon at select stations. With 3 cents per gallon added from convenience store purchases and 25 cents off per gallon via “activated deal alerts,” savings on fuel is as high as 50 cents per gallon.
The program also includes 24 hour roadside assistance by Allstate.

GasBuddy has a Rewards section where you can earn “GasBack” by shopping online via links to 36 different brands and retailers. Some of the brands are auto related, like Advance Auto Parts, Tire Rack, Hertz and Uber, but many are not. GasBack is applied as a credit to your Pay With GasBuddy account, so you need to be enrolled in Pay With GasBuddy to redeem your points.
GasBuddy’s Rewards section also has a Deals page, through you need to enable location services in your settings to see those location-based alerts and other personalized offers. You may want to think twice before enabling location services, as Gas Buddy does share and disclose your location to third parties, as explained in its Privacy Policy.
GasBuddy offers daily prize drawings (like “Win $100 in free gas from us!”). When you submit an entry, you are asked to confirm your address. You can earn entries by reporting prices at gas stations and by “completing challenges,” the latter of which require you to enable location services.
If you have location services available, you can take advantage of the cash back offers on the GasBuddy’s Deals page. Typically the cash back offers are for products one would find in a convenience store, like cookies, crackers, alcoholic beverages and energy drinks.
To earn cash back with Gas Buddy:
- Click on the offer in question
- Purchase the qualifying product(s)
- Snap a picture of the store receipt using the red ‘Snap Receipt’ button
- Submit the receipt
- Cash out via PayPal
Check the terms and conditions the specifics of each individual offer. In general, receipts need to be paper receipts, in English, for purchases made in U.S. dollars. Also, submitted receipts need to clearly show the store name, state, date and purchase amount, and include the qualifying item(s).
GasBuddy also has a program in which you earn GasBack rewards for completing surveys. GasBuddy has partnered with e-Rewards, “the opinion panel that rewards you for your thoughts.” As of this writing, GasBuddy is offering a $2 GasBack bonus for completing your first survey. The process:
1. Enroll in the e-Rewards opinion panel.
2. Earn e-Rewards points for surveys.
3. Cash out points for GasBack rewards (or rewards from airlines, retailers and restaurants)
If you join GasBuddy, you will (repeatedly) be encouraged to take advantage of a thank-you gift card offer from GoNift.com. Except it’s not a $30 gift card; the offer allows you to sign up for select subscription services (AAA, for example) or join a Warehouse Club (like BJ’s Wholesale Club) at a discount. In other words, you have to spend money to use the so-called gift card.
Process-wise, if you click on the red “Claim Your Gift” button within the Gas Buddy app, you are asked to provide your name, zip code and email address to Nift. And later in the process, you are asked to provide your phone number to sign up for the service.
No. GasBuddy encourages you to “invite friends to save!” (via text or email), but currently does not offer any incentive for signing up or for referring a friend or family member.
GasBuddy’s price-finder functionality is very useful and helps explain why the app has more than 100 million downloads (according to the company). But beyond that, there are arguably easier (and less intrusive) options for earning cash back on gas and other purchases, with Upside being another option. If you do use GasBuddy, you may want to limit the sharing/selling of your personal information as much as possible.
You can also use the gas-price finder functionality of the app without an account and without approving the location permission by typing your zip code into the search instead of letting the app pinpoint you automatically.
Click on the icon at the top left of the app. Then navigate to:
– App Settings
– Privacy Rights
– Delete Account
