The Flashfood grocery app connects shoppers with stores selling surplus food

Last updated on March 17th, 2025 at 03:24 pm

Rescue food and save money on groceries. That is the two-fold benefit of using Flashfood, a free grocery app that connects consumers with stores looking to sell food nearing its best-by date. Flashfood works in the U.S. and Canada.

Flashfood is a Toronto-based shopping app that allows users (“flashfoodies”) to buy surplus food at a discount. In the process, Flashfood combats hunger and reduces food waste.

Grocery stores and supermarkets get to sell food nearing its best-by date, thereby reducing the amount of food that ends up in the trash, while also bringing in new customers. Shoppers get to purchase meat, produce and other groceries at up to 50% off.

Yes, Flashfood is a legitimate app. As of March 2025, it has a 4.8 out of 5 star rating in the App store and a 4.0 out of 5 star rating in Google Play. It works at select grocery stores and supermarkets in the U.S. and Canada.

  1. Download the app and find a participating store near you.
  2. Shop for available grocery items in the app.
  3. Complete the purchase process in the app.
  4. Head to the store to pick up your order. Typically, the Flashfood pickup area is near the customer service desk.

If a store is grayed out, it means no Flashfood deals are currently available at that store. Most stores post items to Flashfood between 8 and 10 am.

Flashfood orders must be picked up on or before the best-by dates of the items. Flashfood encourages same-day pickup, both for maximum freshness and to help ensure a smooth pickup process.

According to the USDA, a “Best if Used By/Before” date indicates when a product will be of best flavor or quality.  It is not a purchase or safety date.

Yes, at some locations in the U.S. As of this writing, SNAP EBT is available as a payment method at Tops, Meijer, Giant Eagle and Lucky stores. Check the list of Flashfood Locations and apply the filter “EBT Accepted” to find locations that accept SNAP.

Yes. Fill out the ‘Pay with SNAP EBT’ box with the amount you’d like to charge to your EBT card; the remainder of your order will be charged to the credit card associated with your Flashfood account.

No. You cannot pay cash in-store; all purchases must be made through the Flashfood app. Once you’ve picked up your groceries or the store associate has handed them to you, the associate will mark the order as picked up to clear it from your (in-app) pickup tab.
