Rescue food, save money and discover new eateries you may have not been aware of. That’s the three-fold attraction of Too Good To Go (TGTG), a food rescue app that allows you to see which cafes, restaurants, bakeries and stores in your local area are selling leftover food, which you can buy at half-price or less. Partners on the Too Good To Go app pack their surplus food into “Surprise Bags” that are sold to customers at as little as 25% of the retail value.
The Too Good to Go app was launched in 2016. Today it has more than 100 million registered users across North America, Europe and Australia.
Too Good To Go is a free app that helps save food from going to waste by connecting consumers with stores, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, bakeries and donut shops that have surplus food. The food is sold to users in “Surprise Bags” priced at 25-50% of their contents’ original retail value.

- A list of local stores with available Surprise Bags is displayed to you in the app; enable location access to see the stores in your area. The default search setting is 20 miles in every direction.
- The food is bundled up in what Too Good To Go calls “Surprise Bags.” Typically you will only have a general idea of what your order will include (for example sandwiches and salads, or muffins and pastries), hence the name Surprise Bag. It ensures stores have the flexibility to sell genuine surplus food, as stores can’t predict exactly what kind of food they will have left at the end of the day.
- Place a reservation for an available Surprise Bag from a store you select in the app.
- Pay for the Surprise Bag via the payment method (e.g., credit card, debit card, PayPal, etc.) you have associated with your user profile in the app. Click ‘Reserve,’ select quantity, and double-click to pay.
- Pick up your reserved Surprise Bag at the relevant store during the time-period provided by the store.
The feed of available Surprise Bags updates in real time. New food may become available throughout the day.
Surprise Bags are picked up in-store within the time window specified in the item listing in the Too Good To Go app. When you arrive at the store, you show the app and swipe the in-app slider as proof of your reservation, at which point the store staff will hand you your Surprise Bag.
No. You cannot pay cash in-store; all purchases must be made through the Too Good To Go app.
In some cases, yes. The “dynamic price” tag you see on some Surprise Bags reflects how the price may change depending on:
- Time of day, and
- Interest in the Surprise Bag
The price you see next to a sold-out Surprise Bag is the price the Surprise Bag sold for last.
By making a reservation in the Too Good To Go app, you reserve a Surprise Bag which may or may not be available for pickup.
You may cancel a reservation within the app at any time before the earlier of: the conclusion of pickup; or the end of the pickup time listed by the store. You need to communicate your decision to cancel your reservation to Too Good To Go via the complaint link in the app.
If you do not pick up your reserved Surprise Bag within the time period set out in your reservation confirmation, the Surprise Bag may no longer be available and Too Good To Go can charge you for the reservation price. In the U.S. and Canada, prices are exclusive of applicable sales taxes.
Yes. Stores may cancel your reservation until one (1) hour before the beginning of the agreed pickup time. A store may cancel later than one hour before the pickup time if needed if the store sells out of the food they anticipated to be surplus at time of pickup.
The company takes a commission fee for each “surprise bag” sold through the app; it also charges an annual membership fee to stores who list their unsold food on the platform.
The company describes its business model as “win-win-win.” That is, it helps businesses “unlock” revenue from surplus food, helps consumers enjoy good food at great prices, and helps its business partners (and consumers) protect the environment.
